You have likely heard to not rely on technology in the backcountry and the more you learn, the more you realize how important it is to actively challenge your navigation skills. It keeps your mind strong and also helps to keep you out of trouble. Uplift Adventures highly recommends that you become familiar with map reading and how to use a compass by taking their Beginner Navigation Course. This will open up a world of opportunity for you. Once you have mastered these fundamental skills, even a GPS and apps will make more sense and your navigation skills become much stronger. What to Expect: The beginner navigation course will focus on map reading and how to use a compass. This is a one-and-a-half-day course to give you enough information to understand how to navigate with a topographic map and compass. On the first day (evening), you will focus on map reading skills and will be in the classroom. The second day will be a mix of classroom (morning) and being outdoors (afternoon). The key objectives of the course include:• Map Reading (legend, scale, grid reference, map symbols, map interpretation)• How to plan out a route• Identifying map features in the field• How to take a compass bearing• Declination• Orientating yourself on the map• Key navigational techniques to help you in the backcountry.
